3 key insights from Carolin von der Mosel
The limitations of labels in L&D
Carolin argues that labels, whether job titles or personality traits, can hinder personal and professional growth. She advocates for skills-based assessments and flexible, project-based roles that focus on adaptability and potential. Instead of rigid titles or annual reviews, she encourages regular and informal check-ins between managers and employees to continuously evaluate skills and goals.
A purpose-driven strategy for employee growth
Carolin advocates for a more purpose-driven approach to employee development. She identifies 10 motivational drivers, such as the desire for relatedness, status, curiosity, mastery and acceptance. At Adevinta, she introduced a unique approach to employee development, matching early-career employees with projects based on their personal motivations, such as curiosity or mastery, rather than traditional role assignments. This innovative strategy not only allowed employees to explore areas aligned with their passions but also resulted in deeper engagement and accelerated professional growth.
The importance of empathy in workplace development
Empathy is essential in preventing workplace labeling, according to Carolin. She believes individuals can learn to become more empathetic and offers practical approaches to make this happen. Reverse mentoring and cohort-based learning, for example, help break down silos and foster mutual understanding across teams. One powerful tool she highlights is the Human Library exercise, where employees share personal stories. This activity reveals common experiences, deepens empathy, and strengthens connections within the workplace.
